Cobar Enterprise Facilitation Inc

There are two main business organisations in Cobar, with different, but complimentary roles.

The Cobar Business Association aims to assist businesses by providing up to date business information, assisting in the provision of training, and organising business promotion activities, such as the annual business awards and shop local campaigns.

The Cobar Enterprise Facilitation Inc project aims to, through the employment of an Enterprise Facilitator, provide free, confidential and competent business advice to entrepreneurs wishing to establish a business in Cobar, or existing businesses wishing to change their operations or expand.

Cobar Shire Council supports both organisations in a bid to promote a healthy, diverse business community for the Shire.  Contact information is provided for both organisations, or alternatively, contact Angela Shepherd, Council's Special Projects Officer, on (02) 6836 5888 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Cobar Business Association

The Cobar Business Association (CBA) aims to encourage Cobar residents to shop locally and to improve the skills and knowledge of business owners through the provision of information, training and courses.

Council supports the Association and a Council officer is currently the Secretary for the Association. Council also provides administrative assistance with the Cobar Quids project.

The CBA issues a regular newsletter following meetings.  Click here for the latest edition.

The CBA is open to all Cobar businesses. The Association is run by a voluntary committee and is always seeking new steering committee members and ideas/suggestions to assist their members. For more information, contact one of the committee members, or click here for a renewal of membership to the Cobar Business Association.

Cobar Quids

The Cobar Quids have been in use since about 2003, as an initiative of the Cobar Business Association Inc (CBA), to encourage Cobar residents to "shop locally". A Cobar Quid is a minted medallion with a face value, to be exchanged for goods and services at a participating local business.

It was established with the approval of the Australian Mint, and operates within guidelines set down by them at the time of its inception. CBA "sells" Quids to organisations. The majority of Quids are used by the clubs, pubs, mines, schools and community organisations as prizes or incentives. The recipients then use the Quids to purchase goods and services within Cobar. The businesses can then redeem the Quids for cash.

They can only be spent in Cobar. Individuals cannot redeemed them for cash, only businesses. They come in denominations with face values of $5, $10, $25 & $50. The lower ones are particularly popular with the schools and clubs.

Council supports the Cobar Quids project by providing administration of the Quids. Council holds a store of Quids and does the banking for the CBA. Organisations that wish to purchase the Quids do so through the Council and businesses seeking to redeem their Quids present them to Council.

Cobar Enterprise Facilitation Inc

Cobar Enterprise Facilitation Inc. is a community funded, non-profit organisation that offers free, confidential business coaching to anyone in the Cobar shire. The enterprise facilitation project was set up in Cobar in 2007 to help establish, retain and expand small business in the area with the aim of creating a sustainable business future for Cobar.

The project employs Mark Workman, as a full time facilitator. Mark is available to assist business people who are contemplating starting a new business in the Cobar Shire or existing businesses looking to expand or change direction. The enterprise facilitator works with the client to determine their strengths and weaknesses in the areas of product development, sales and marketing and financial management.  The facilitator then finds local people who are able to assist the client in areas in which they lacks skills or experience. Mark is also able to assist the business person to establish links with similar businesses in other areas of the state or country or to find mentors where appropriate.

The project is managed by a resource board made up of local people who support the enterprise facilitator and offer assistance to business people.  Due to its wide range of skills and experience the resource board is an invaluable asset to people developing their business.  The board provides mentors, contacts and practical advice to the projects clients.
