Why Work for Council?

What to include in your application:

Cobar Shire Council is committed to delivering value to our community through living our corporate values of Accountability, Communication, Effective Leadership, Integrity and Teamwork. The abbreviated mantra “ACE IT” represents who we are as an organisation, these values are the guiding principles for how we carry out our duties and interact with our community.

Local Government offers many different career paths for potential employees – engineering, planning, environmental services, administration, finance, records management, human resources, safety, projects, technical services, grants and an array of outdoor operational roles including truck drivers, plant operators, trades people, road construction, parks and gardens, water and sewer.

Council owns and operates the Cobar Shire & TAFE Library, Great Cobar Heritage Centre (museum and visitor information centre), Lilliane Brady Village (aged care facility), Children’s Services, Youth & Fitness Centre as well as Works Depots in Cobar and Euabalong.

As an equal opportunity employer, we hire based on the overall merit of the candidate. We strive to remain an employer of choice in a highly competitive market and believe that in order to be successful, the attitude of our employees is equally as important as their ability and experience. Our recruitment philosophy is based around the saying ‘recruit for attitude, train for skill’ because what people know changes but who they are doesn’t.

Work life balance

Cobar is a great place to raise a family away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Full time staff work a 35/38 hour week over a nine-day fortnight, which allows staff to better balance work and life priorities, with the fortnightly day off equating to an additional five week’s leave each year.

Leave Entitlements

  • 4 weeks annual leave
  • 15 days sick leave
  • Long service leave after 5 years’s service
  • Paid parental leave provides options for paid leave from Council and Government funded leave

Health and Wellbeing Initiatives

Council offers many health and wellbeing initiatives throughout the year to help maintain both the physical and mental health of our employees. This includes a biennial Health and Wellbeing Day where we show our commitment to these initiatives by shutting down operations to invest in the positive mental health of our employees.

Other initiatives include free membership to the Council owned gymnasium at the Youth & Fitness Centre, a season pass to the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool and annual flu vaccination clinics.

Employee Assistance Program

Council’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential, voluntary and free counselling service provided by qualified counsellors in a range of delivery modes. It is available to staff who are seeking assistance in dealing with any issues affecting their work or life in general.

Social Club

Council employees are encouraged to participate in our active social club that offers a range of activities throughout the year for staff and their families.

Salary Packaging

Council employees can access a variety of salary packaging options through an external provider. These options include novated leases, remote area housing, remote utilities and compassionate travel.
